Monitoring software 9.0.16 smtp relay

We are attempting to setup an smtp relay to send notification E-mails through Gmail to our administrators. When we run Test E-mail settings the E-mail comes through. However, when we test the system by shutting down a server or testing the water sensor we receive no E-mails. Do you happen to know why this is?

    Firstly, we'll have to advise upgrading to the latest version to isolate previously found bugs and/or issues.
